History
Our history shows that great things can happen when you keep your focus local.
In 1874, Bank of the West opened its doors on the California frontier as Farmers National Gold Bank. One of just 10 banks nationwide authorized to issue paper currency backed by gold reserves, the San Jose bank helped people build homes, finance farms, and grow their businesses.
Over the years, we grew bigger and reached beyond our hometown roots. Customers entrusted us with their money, we continued to provide great service, protect deposits and lend prudently to the growing communities we served. In 1880, Farmers National Gold Bank became First National Bank of San Jose.
Careful management and sound banking practices allowed the bank to contribute to the Bay Area's growth through the 1906 earthquake, the Great Depression, and two World Wars. Following World War II, the bank grew rapidly and by 1979 had 35 San Francisco Bay Area locations and $350 million in assets.
In 1979, we changed our name to Bank of the West. The change reflected our desire to grow and provide our style of relationship banking beyond the Bay Area. Today, we have branch and commercial banking offices across the West Coast, the Southwest, the Midwest, and the Rocky Mountain states.
Since 1980, we have been affiliated with BNP Paribas, a leading bank in Europe with an international reach. In 2001, our holding company BancWest Corporation became a wholly-owned subsidiary of BNP Paribas.
Bank of the West has continued to grow in recent years, thanks to a combination of organic growth and strategic acquisitions, including United California Bank, the largest Los Angeles-based bank, in 2002, Union Safe Deposit Bank in California's Central Valley and Community First Bank in Fargo, ND, both in 2004, and Commercial Federal Bank, of Omaha, in 2005.
Today, Bank of the West operates more than 600 retail, wealth, commercial and business banking offices in 23 states. Prudent credit underwriting, a diversified loan portfolio, and careful risk management have allowed us to grow to more than $80.7 billion in assets. It is one of the nation's largest banks, yet it preserves its local feel and its award-winning style of relationship banking that ensures superior customer service.
Southland EDC is a non-profit Certified Development Company chartered to assist the small business community of California and has done so since 1980. Our mission is simple: be a resource to local small businesses in an effort to foster job creation and retention through the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 504 loan program.
Considered by many to be the standard bearer in customer service, our goal is to take complex financing scenarios and make them smooth and efficient. For many small business owners, this may be their first experience purchasing fixed assets for their business. It’s critical to establish expectations up front and to have someone walk you through each step.
Our staff has many decades of experience navigating the world of commercial finance and we aim to pass that knowledge along to our clients. To learn more about the SBA’s 504 loan program, contact one of our experienced Loan Officers today.
The history and tradition of the Filippi winegrowing family continues and flourishes today with each new vintage as 4th generation Joseph ‘J.P.’ Filippi builds upon over 90 years in the historic Cucamonga-Guasti winegrowing area.
Since 1994, the Filippis have revitalized old vineyards and undertaken new vine plantings. They continue working to restore the historic Ellena Bros./Regina Winery with the City of Rancho Cucamonga.
On March 31st 1995 the United States Treasury Department’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (BATF) ruled Cucamonga Valley an approved viticulture area ( View Appellation ). This was the result of a petition written and filed by our winery specifically for us and other vintners and growers in the area. This new law enabled wineries use of the words Cucamonga Valley on their wine labels utilizing at least 85% Cucamonga grapes.
The Filippis have assembled a top-flight vinification (winemaking) team, headed by Director of Winemaking Joseph P. Filippi, Assistant Winemaker Enologist Ashlyn Haigh, Dr. Fred S. Nury – Emeritus Professor of Enology and Food Science California State University Fresno and retired vintner-winemaker Rene’ Biane. With this advanced level of winemaking expertise, Joseph Filippi Winery & Vineyards has placed Rancho Cucamonga back on the winemaking map.
history2Joseph Filippi wines are the result of a craftsmanship derived from tradition, passion, skill and artistry. The fifth-generation winery is establishing itself among California’s finest producers, while remaining true to the family’s heritage of excellence in Cucamonga Valley winemaking.
Joseph Filippi limited production releases include Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet, Mourvédre, Muscat of Alexandria, Syrah, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Grigio, Tempranillo, Grenache, Sangiovese, as well as aged sherries and specialty ports including the popular Fondante Ciello ‘chocolate’ Port and also Ports from Zinfandel, Alicante and Petite Sirah. The Filippi’s also present barrel select Barrel Blends.
Since 1995, the winery has undertaken several new acres of vineyard plantings and vineyard revitalization projects in the Etiwanda area of RanchoCucamonga. Premium red grape varietals include Petite Sirah, Grenache Noir, Tannat, Mourvedre, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante, Tempranillo and Syrah. New vine plantings in cooperation with the City of Rancho Cucamonga and the Rails to Trails project, the Cucamonga Valley Water District, Red Hill Country Club, and other private entities are scheduled for 2008 through 2010.
The Filippis’ have expanded their operation and are producing delicious award-winning vintages, according to industry experts. “It’s pretty amazing what they’ve been able to do,” says Dan Berger, a Sonoma County wine columnist whose credentials include a nine-year stint as the Los Angeles Times wine writer. “It’s not an easy business to be in,” Berger said. “But the Filippis are really reaching out and making great strides. They’ve produced excellent wines and they’re improving all the time.”
